Herniated Disc in Highlands Ranch

disc injury

Can a herniated disc cause sciatica?

A common condition we see in our Highlands Ranch Chiropractic office is patients with burning, numbing, and tingling pain down one or both of their legs. These symptoms are commonly referred to as sciatica. Sciatica is a very serious condition and can lay you up for several days or weeks. One of the most common causes of sciatica is a herniated or bulging disc in your lumbar spine. We can see the disc bulge or disc herniation on an MRI, but the main reason it is there is because of a spinal misalignment.

Your spine and vertebrae can become misaligned for a variety of reasons, but when it does it can put a lot of pressure on the discs that lie between each vertebra. Whether you are sitting all day at a desk or working heavy labor, your spine takes a toll. Even stay-at-home moms put a ton of pressure on their spine by bending over all day long while picking up their babies or in and out of car seats. No matter what your daily stresses are, once your vertebra become out of position, it will naturally start to put pressure on the disc. If there is enough pressure on the disc and it starts to bulge out, then the major symptoms of sciatica can start to occur.

At first, it might just be a little lower back or hip tension. If left unseen, it can start to shoot pain into the gluteus muscles and down into the leg. If the nerve stays pinched long enough, then numbing and tingling sensations will occur. Severe sciatica can even cause numbing of the foot and toes. Most sciatica patients cannot even bend over to put their shoes or socks on. It is essential for you and your nervous system to release the pinching as soon as possible. Chiropractic is a non-invasive therapy that gently realigns the spine and takes pressure off your disc and off your nerves. By receiving a chiropractic adjustment, the nerve starts to fire better (or wake up) and your pain levels will diminish very quickly.

After your spine is in proper alignment, then we can start to rehabilitate the surrounding muscles, ligaments and tendons through proper spinal exercises. Disc herniations and sciatica are no joke and should be dealt with immediately. Don’t wait until too much damage is done. Visit your Highlands Ranch Chiropractor as soon as you can so you can start to feel and function better quickly.
